Inexpensive Ways To Spend Less On Your Fuel Cost

By Margaret B. Petitt

Do you drive "the extra mile" to get your gas at a slightly cheaper price? Do you hesitate about driving to a place, afraid of what you'll have to pay to refill the tank, with fuel prices going up all the time? You might always get yourself a bicycle, and do away with your car keys, but there are some things that you can do before resorting to that. Putting the right wheels on your car will help conserve fuel.

Thankfully there are quite a few free and easy ways of saving on fuel. How often do you remember to check your tire pressure? Just by having the proper amount of air in your tires could help you save gas, because under inflated tires causes an increase in fuel consumption. A plain tire gauge is all you need to regularly check your tire pressure and save on gas, at no charge. Do you know the time of day you buy gas can affect how much you will pay for what you get?

Fuel is marketed by the volume, and since liquids expand as they heat up, logic would tell you to buy the gas at the coldest part of the day, you will get the best deal. While there is a great deal of 24 hour shopping, wake up early to beat all of the traffic, which will allow you to save fuel without being stuck in traffic. There are websites that can tell you which gas stations have the cheapest gas, but if you have to go far out of the way to get it, the purpose will end up being defeated. The typical reason for washing your vehicle is so that it will look good, but there's a bonus in that doing so can actually help save fuel.

A clean vehicle will cause less drag, just like swimmers shaving off all of their body hair, or skiers sporting skin-tight racing suits, to go faster. Turn the cleaning of the car into a pleasurable family thing. Kids love splashing each other and getting wet, as long as it's not cold out. Now, you know the engine-revving that teenagers - not you, of course - do at stop lights? This may come as a shock: rev your engine just 15 times and you've kissed adios to enough gas to take you a mile. Perform this often, and it quickly adds up. Think it over next time you become stuck without any gas.

You're going to get the best gas mileage from your car whenever you service it regularly, much as you may hate the idea. It's a trade-off in the short term, between the additional gas you pay for in the event the car isn't running optimally, and the amount you pay to have it serviced. At a minimum, the filters - one for oil and one for air - must be checked that they're clean or replaced, as should the oil, and new spark plugs should be installed when your car is serviced.
